Sunset AJ Jolley Park Campbell County Kentucky On a lovely August evening...After digging the Impala (a 1968 convertible) out of storage Thursday I got it home and it was acting funny. I originally planned on driving it to work Friday morning but I felt pretty uncomfortable with the way it was acting so I opted not. When I got in from work I figured out the problem and asked my Honey, Lisa if she wanted to go down into the country to find a barn to shoot sunset, she did and off we went. We drove all the way down to Butler, Kentucky seeing lots of barns but none worth stopping. As we approached the rural city it was quite evident that the sunset was going to be a doosy. Knowing we were not far from AJ Jolly Park I decided to shoot up there. It had been 25 years or even longer since I had visited the park, so I had no idea what was in store for us. As the sun set over the horizion things were definately different from my last visit but when we pulled up to the lake it was quite evident where we should shoot and we sat back and watched a beautiful show.
Devou Park
Devou Park Bandshell Boulevard Covington, Kentucky I tell you all what, I had a great 5 day weekend after needing a serious break from the day job. Wednesday I was offroading on Spaas Creek Rd near Red River Gorge, hiked to Gray's Arch and witnessed a fantastic sunset on the Sheltowee Trace National Trail. Thursday I saw a great band live and afterwards ended up at an after party in an 150 year old warehouse in Cincinnati's Over-The-Rhine which lead to some drunken urban exploring at 5 am Friday morning. Then came Saturday morning when I woke up to a thick fog outside the house. After checking the OHGO Artimis Cameras online and seeing there was fog everywhere in the Cincinnati area I checked out Channel 12's Tower Cam and to my amazement you could only see the tops of two buildings sticking out of a sea of fog. Excitedly, I woke up Lisa and out we went, heading up to Devou Park in Covington, Kentucky. The goal was to go to the famous overlook of the Cincinnati Skyline but along the way we got distracted as the fog was making for beautiful and surreal morning scenes. We couldn't resist taking some shots along Bandshell Blvd. We both love fog and seriously, we couldn't have started off our day any better!
Doe Run Lake Sunset #1
Doe Run Lake Covington, Kentucky Sitting on the computer one night over the summer I realized that sunset had some serious potential when I looked out the back window as the sun was a massive orange muted ball just above the horizon. So off in the car I hopped shooting up to nearby Doe Run Lake in South Covington, Kentucky. As always I arrived to the show a little late but I enjoy shooting the after light of sunset rather than the sunset itself and there was plenty of light left to get some shots of the beautiful scene that greeted me when I arrived.
Foggy Newport Kentucky
Newport Kentucky/Ohio River From Eden Park Cincinnati Ohio While funning about in Sunday morning's fog event I realized that I had lost something. My love for photographing Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. In fact, besides shooting sunsets at nearby Doe Run Lake it had been over a year since I photographed nearly anything else here besides concerts. I realized I was almost strictly limiting myself to landscapes, waterfalls and arches. Visiting Eden Park in Cincinnati rekindled that fire that I had allowed to die out. Driving past the 120 year old reservoir and pumping station, the Krohn Conservatory and the old water tower was truly enlightening. There is a lot to photograph around here and for a long time I've not paid any of it much attention. In the future you'll certainly be seeing a lot more from my home than in the past! One of my surprises was from the Cliff Drive Overlook, though it's got a great view overlooking the Ohio River, Dayton, Bellevue and Newport, Kentucky, I've never found it very photogenic but on this morning it was a completely different story! What a mood as a late morning light illuminated the fog over Newport and the Ohio River! Just the inspiration I needed to stop ignoring something that's been right under my nose!
