Hanson's Point Red River Gorge Geological Area Daniel Boone National Forest Wolfe County Kentucky On this day there was supposed to be a scheduled hike with the Natural Arch and Bridge Society in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, but as a cold front moved through bringing a day of rain the hike was postponed to the next day. Myself and good friend Chris Morris had rented a cabin together at Natural Bridge for the week, and the rainy morning found us a bit less motivated to get right out and do some hiking. However, after a few hours of watching the Discovery Channel where two morons place themselves in unreal survival situations and spend the entire show solving problems, we were motivated to solve our own problem, boredom. After some discussion we decided to go to a place neither of us had been before, Hanson’s Point. There’s something to love about hiking in the rain and on a weekday in the RRG. There’s no one to be found, anywhere. It is about a two and a half mile hike to the point, the first half is an official trail, the last half is a user trail. Overall I’d have to say it’s a pretty easy hike. My favorite part of the journey were the tight natural tunnels through the evergreens. Once we arrived to our destination, I immediately understood why this was such a popular destination. What a view! At first I chose not to photograph from the overlooks, a strong wind and horizontal rain gave me no motivation to pull out the camera. Instead I just stood there, enjoying the moody view as clouds formed off the trees in the valleys and lifted above the ridge tops. It was a scene that played over and over. In front of me you could see the air condensing against the exposed rock of the point and a trail of fog would cascade into the valley. It was a peaceful and beautiful moment. Eventually the rain did slow up a bit and I finally pulled out my camera and took several shots. As we made our way back we saw user trail heading off towards Pinch’em Tight Gap and out of curiosity, we decided to see what we could find out there. Passing through another evergreen tunnel we made our way out the ridge where it eventually opened up for some really cool views of Chimney Top Rock, Half Moon Rock and this moody view of Hanson’s Point. What a great day of adventure to a place that is now among my favorite spots in The Red!
