Rock Bridge Swift Camp Creek Clifty Wilderness Daniel Boone National Forest Wolfe County Kentucky In December 2019 myself and my good friend Leo Combs headed out for a day of photography. Though it was supposed to snow heavily in the southern part of the state, I was getting reports is was pouring rain and there was no way I was going to try and learn a new camera in the rain. So Leo and I decided to hit the Red River Gorge. He had never been before so to make things easy on myself and him we decided to do the touristy tour of Red River Gorge. Our first stop of the day was the Rock Bridge Trail in the Clifty Wilderness. For years now I've never really liked any shots I've taken of Rock Bridge, but when Leo and I arrived I saw a sand bar had formed in Swift Camp Creek on the side I've never had the opportunity to shoot. Though it was icing and I had no idea what I was really doing with the camera I think I came away with my favorite shot I've ever taken of this unique landform!
Sunset Rough Trail Red River Gorge Geological Area Daniel Boone National Forest Powell County Kentucky After a day of offroading on Spaas Creek Rd and a hike to Gray's Arch we timed a nice sunset along the Rough Trail in Red River Gorge perfectly! It's been a bit of a weird Fall here in Kentucky as there has been less color and more brown because of a drought and unusually warm temps, but we were still able to find some color on our recent trip. For me, Autumn was pretty much a dud, so I was extremely grateful to be able to get out and get in it only if it was for a couple days.
Slivermine Arch Coomer Ridge Campground Red River Gorge Geological Area Daniel Boone National Forest Wolfe County Kentucky Finally got to go down and visit Kentucky's Red River Gorge recently after several months of being super busy, although I didn't get to spend a whole day down there it was still nice to get out to the mountains and visit some places I had not visited in quite some time. The first arch on our trip was Silvermine Arch. I had last visited this arch back in October 2010 and had been eager to do a return trip. Located on a trail in the Koomer Ridge Campground the 1.5 mile hike for the most part is fairly easy, the last 1/3 involving some steps and a moderate decent where the trail ends at the top of the arch. The first place I headed was to the base, which, after visiting several perspectives, turned out to be my favorite view. I love the ruggedness beneath and the contrasting color between the green boulders below and the orange sandstone above. I'm definitely looking forward to visiting again on a gloomy day during fall foliage season, that's for sure.
