Upper Waterfall Little Bloody Creek Wolfe County Kentucky The return to the Upper Falls on Little Bloody Creek was a bit more shaky than I expected. When I last visited here it was cold, the ground was frozen and there was a dusting of snow. Easy peasy down to the falls. Little did I realize on this latest visit that the decent to the falls would be a bit more challenging. This roadside falls is one of the Kentucky's more interesting as it drops 50 or so feet as a ribbon of water into a short, but impressive slot canyon. The approach to this falls looks easier than it is, when before I had stable frozen ground, this time we were faced with soft, shifting soil and rocks making for a cautious trek. Last time I was here I wanted to get a photo of the falls showing more the slot canyon but because we had so many I chose to hold off. This time however, it was just Jason and I. Once I took this photo we made our way down to closer to the base of the falls. And we thought the decent down was sketchy! The soil at the base of the cliff was slick as ice! Thank goodness for trekking poles! Sadly this area is a total dumping ground for locals to dispose of their trash. Diapers, cans, bottles, wrappers, a whole bag of trash had been thrown out over the cliff. I did my best to clean up what I could but that's a battle that will forever be lost as I'm sure there will be plenty more tossed there tomorrow, and the next day and the next.
McCammon Falls McCammon Creek Greyhawk Community Park Greyhawk Jackson County Kentucky Back in April of 2013 I visited a waterfall that I had no idea existed until that day. Located near Grey Hawk, Kentucky about 40 miles east of I-75, McCammon Falls is a two tiered 40 footer just outside a city park. Difficult lighting at the upper tier made for challenging work so I opted on focusing on the lower falls with it's beautiful green foreground. Definitely looking forward to a return trip here, a little more water and a cloudier day!
McCammon Falls McCammon Branch Daniel Boone National Forest Grey Hawk Jackson County Kentucky With a perfectly forecasted day of clouds and cool weather on a recent Saturday so I couldn't resist getting out and doing some waterfalling. I'd been wanting to revisit McCammon Falls in Jackson County, Kentucky in good conditions for some time. It had been 4 years since I had spent some quality time with this waterfall, which also happened to be my first visit. Although I had been here two more times after that both those visits were of the extreme, once with no water and the other there was way too much water. On this latest visit I couldn't have asked for better flow. See that tree on the left? I hate that tree. In the case of this shot I thought it fit the composition well, but to get straight on shots of the falls showing both tiers is quite the challenge since the dead limbs protrude across the view of the waterfall. I've been threatening to bring an extendable saw and trimming the limbs off for some time now but on this latest trip I wasn't in the mood to fight a 6 ft tall pole with a sharp blade on the end in the vehicle all day long. Some day though, I'm going to clean that view up.
