Washington Oaks - Coquina Beach
Washington Oaks Gardens State Park
Located approximately 20 miles South of St. Augustine, this state park is known for it's beautiful gardens located inland, what it's not known for is the beautiful and unique coquina rock formations that line it's Atlantic coast. The outcroppings, called the Anastasia Formation stretches from the northern end of Anastasia Island in St. Augustine to 250 miles south in Palm Beach and is composed of a type of limestone composed of seashell fragments, the fossilized remains of a small clam, coarse sand and clay. Many of the old buildings, including the old fort Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine are built from this rock. It is unknown to me if there are other formations such as this exposed along the Florida coast for this is the only one I have seen.
